Around 930,000 people have enlisted in the Ukrainian Armed Forces as part of the military mobilization against Russia, a figure that is expected to reach one million next week, the Ukrainian deputy defence minister announced today.
Ivan Havryliuk said that in the current situation the country finds itself in, it is necessary for part of the population to defend Ukraine’s interests on the front line, and for the rest to work in the rear on defensive issues.
According to Havryliuk, a large part of the mobilized population is not in a position to meet the needs of the Armed Forces, as they have to undergo a basic training process of at least three months.
He also defended the need to orientate the Ukrainian economy towards a war model because support from Ukraine’s partner countries seems to have already peaked.
At the same time, Russia is continuing its efforts to move forward, he said, according to the Ukrainian news agency UNIAN, quoted by Spain’s Europa Press.
According to the Ukrainian authorities, at the beginning of the year the Russian military presence in the territories temporarily occupied by Moscow totaled around 440,000 people.
Kyiv is now talking about 600,000 Russians and estimates that by the end of the year the number could rise to 800,000 people in Russian-controlled areas.
Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine at the end of February 2022 in order to ‘demilitarize and denazify’ the neighboring country.
Since then, the war has progressed unabated and both Moscow and Kyiv have ordered military mobilizations to reinforce their armed forces.
