These days it’s difficult to find someone who hasn’t shopped at Temu or who hasn’t listened to recommendations from the online commerce platform. Still, the Chinese company is being accused of deceiving European consumers. This is guaranteed by the Federation of Consumer Associations of the European Union (BEUC), which has already filed a complaint about user manipulation. As well as for an alleged violation of the EU Digital Services Regulation.
The general director of BEUC highlights, in statements cited by RTP, that the Temu website, which has 75 million European consumers per month, “is full of misleading interfaces to encourage consumers to spend more on the platform”. “Consumers receive different, more expensive versions when they click on a product”, adds Monique Goyens. The difficulties encountered “when they want to close the account” are also highlighted. There is also an accusation that Temu does not reveal, in many cases, whether we are dealing with a product that meets European Union safety requirements.
Temu defends himself against the accusations
Temu now presents the defense in statements to France Press. The company guarantees that it will analyze the complaint, showing full availability to cooperate with interested parties. It also states full availability to “improve the service and correct any deficiencies, (…) we are committed to transparency and full compliance with all laws”.
More complaints against Temu
In early 2024, the German Federation of Consumer Associations had already accused Temu of displaying misleading product reviews. As well as deceiving consumers when it comes to price reductions. In February, new obligations were imposed on Temu by the EU Digital Services Regulation. The platform was warned that fines would be imposed if prohibitions on misleading interfaces were not respected. As is the case of presenting a lower sales price than what consumers will pay.
