Israel Announces Death of Hezbollah Leader in South Lebanon

The Israeli army today claimed the death of a commander of the anti-tank unit of the special forces of the Shiite militia Hezbollah in a new bombardment in southern Lebanon, without the pro-Iranian movement having confirmed the action.

In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it was Ghareeb al-Shujaa, commander of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan force, who led the anti-tank missile unit in the Meiss el-Jabal area, in southern Lebanon, and who is responsible for orchestrating numerous attacks against Israel.

“The IDF attacked and eliminated the terrorist Ghareeb al_Shujaa, commander of the Radwan anti-tank missile unit in Meiss el-Jabal, responsible for numerous missile attacks against Ramot Naftali in northern Israel,” reads the statement.

Israeli forces also identified and attacked a missile launcher that was ready to fire at Israeli territory, as well as attacking a Hezbollah “terrorist cell” that was preparing to attack Israeli troops, the IDF statement added.

The army also confirmed that an anti-tank missile fired from Lebanon hit the Yiron kibbutz in northern Israel this morning, killing a Thai worker and injuring another civilian.

Israel also claimed to have intercepted and destroyed two unmanned aerial vehicles approaching Israeli territory, while around 25 other projectiles fired from Lebanon were identified and set off alarms in the cities of Haifa and Krayot, on the Mediterranean coast of northern Israel, some of which were intercepted and others hit, with no casualties or injuries reported so far.

Israel and the Shiite group have been engaged in an exchange of fire for more than a year, in parallel to the war in Gaza, which has intensified in recent days, when the Israeli army stepped up bombing in the neighboring country and launched a ground incursion that has killed more than 2,100 people and injured 11,000 in Lebanon.

On Thursday night, Israeli planes launched a bombing raid in central Beirut, targeting Wafiq Safa, the head of Hezbollah’s liaison unit, who was apparently unharmed, but killing 25 other people and wounding 117, after Israel killed the Shiite group’s top leader, Hassan Nasrallah, two weeks ago.

This morning, in the West Bank, the Israeli army announced that it had shot down the leader of the extremist Islamic Jihad movement in the Nour Shams Palestinian refugee camp in Tulkarem.

“An airplane struck the Tulkarem area and eliminated Mohammed Abdullah, the leader of the Islamic Jihad terrorist network in Nour Shams,” the army said in a statement, adding that it also killed another fighter.

Abdullah was the successor to Mohammed Jaber, known as “Abu Shujaa”, who was killed on August 29 in an Israeli attack on the Nour Shams camp, it added.
