Australia to Ban Use of Social Networks by Under-16s

Australia is to go ahead with a decision to ban the use of social networks by people under the age of 16, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stating that the measure seeks to minimize “the damage being done to young people”.

“Social media is damaging our children and I’m putting a stop to it,” Albanese said at a press conference at Parliament House in Canberra. “I’ve spoken to thousands of parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. Like me, they are concerned about the online safety of our children.”

Albanese said that even if this measure doesn’t solve all the problems, it’s the kind of law that “sets the parameters for our society and helps ensure the right outcomes”.

“We have laws that state that people can’t buy alcohol if they’re under 18 and, from time to time, those rules can be broken,” noted the Australian Prime Minister.

It is known that, in order to enforce this law, the Australian government is putting “the onus on social networks”, suggesting that they could be fined if they don’t find ways to ensure that young people under the age of 16 are on these platforms.
