AstraZeneca’s vaccine against Covid-19 will no longer be marketed in the European Union from Tuesday. The decision comes after the European Commission (EC) withdrew the marketing authorization at the end of March at the request of the British pharmaceutical company itself.
“At the request of the owner, the marketing authorization for the covid-19 vaccine Vaxzevria, granted on 29 January 2021, is withdrawn,” says a document dated 27 March this year from the EC.
According to the 20 minutes, AstraZeneca’s request is related to the lack of demand for the drug and the excess of vaccines available on the market. “As several updated vaccines for Covid-19 variants have been developed, there is now a surplus of vaccines available. This has led to a decrease in demand for Vaxzervria, which is no longer being manufactured or supplied,” the company said in a statement.
Following the Brussels decision, AstraZeneca recalled the role of the vaccine in the fight against coronavirus. “According to independent estimates, more than 6.5 million lives were saved and more than 3 billion doses were delivered worldwide in the first year of use alone.”
