Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump declared victory today, as US media projections put him just three electoral votes away from reaching the 270 needed to return to the White House.
“This is a political victory that our country has never seen before,” the New York magnate told thousands of supporters gathered at the Palm Beach Convention Center in Florida after watching the election night celebrations at his Mar-a-Lago resort.
Trump stressed that Tuesday’s election results had given him a “great sense of love” and that the nation had given him “a powerful mandate.”
Speaking alongside his wife, Melania Trump, whom he has already introduced as “First Lady,” his children, his vice presidential candidate, J.D. Vance, described as “a surefire choice,” and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, the Republican candidate said that with this victory he would “help the country heal” and “repair the border” with Mexico.
“I want to thank the American people for the extraordinary honor of electing me as their 47th President,” Trump declared, taking up the slogan of the MAGA movement (“Make America Great Again”) and proclaiming the beginning of “a golden era for the country.”
At around 8:30 a.m. (Lisbon time), Trump had 267 electoral votes against 224 for his Democratic opponent, Kamala Harris, according to projections by the American media, including the Fox television network, which has already declared the former President the winner, and was leading the count in all the states considered decisive and with no declared winner yet.
“We will make America great again,” insisted the former US President (2017-2021), noting that today “will be remembered as the day Americans regain control of their country,” when projections indicated the Republican Party would regain control of the Senate and the result of the House of Representatives was still open.
In a speech lasting about half an hour, in front of his campaign team, Donald Trump praised the work of his supporters, who he said had organized around 900 events, pointing out that in the 2016 elections, which he won against Hillary Clinton, and in 2020, which he lost to Joe Biden, their potential was underestimated.
In this sense, he commented that, in some way, the same thing happened during this campaign, but on a smaller scale, and praised the victories in Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina and the results that point to the same path in the other four states considered decisive: Arizona, Nevada, Wisconsin and Michigan.
“I promise not to “We will rest until we deliver a strong, safe and prosperous America that our children deserve and that you deserve,” declared the Republican, who also made an appeal for unity. “Success will unite us and we will start by putting America first. I will not let you down.”
Democrat and current Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, indicated that she will only speak later today, according to one of her campaign coordinators, justifying that there were still votes to be counted.
