At Least Three Killed in Bomb Attack in Northeastern Afghanistan

“In this incident, three policemen were killed and five others were injured,” Zabiullah Amiri, director of Information and Culture for Badakhshan province, told EFE.

The incident took place at around 12:00 (07:30 in Lisbon) in the city of Faizabad, the capital of Badakhshan province, he added.

The explosive was placed on a motorcycle and exploded as police vehicles involved in destroying opium plantations passed by, Amiri added.

To date, no organization has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The extremist group Islamic State, which has become the Taliban’s main rival since the withdrawal of international troops, has claimed responsibility for almost all attacks since August 2021, when the Taliban took power.

Although the Taliban insist on denying that the armed organization poses a security challenge, the Islamic State of Khorasan, the Afghan branch of the terrorist group, has emerged as the main threat to the country’s stability.

On March 21, at least 23 people were killed and 60 injured in a powerful explosion that rocked the offices of a bank in the city of Kandahar.

The March attack was claimed by the Islamic State.
