The possibility of creating a space station on the Moon poses some logistical challenges for agencies such as NASA, which is why infrastructures such as the Flexible Levitation on a Track (FLOAT) system are being considered.
This project, currently being evaluated by NASA, aims to build a floating railway line on the surface of the Moon that would be able to provide “reliable, autonomous and efficient transportation of goods” on our natural satellite. Naturally, this system would be of crucial importance in the daily operations of astronauts who might inhabit a station on the Moon.
The project is described on NASA’s official website, where it is stated that the railway would use “magnetic robots” that would be capable of transporting more than 100 tons of goods over “multiple kilometers per day”.
Of course, it is not known whether this FLOAT project will become a reality, but given that NASA intends to take astronauts to the surface of the Moon in 2026, it is likely that we will hear news about future projects in the next few years.
