Melania Trump Defends Abortion Rights Again (Unlike Her Husband)

Melania Trump on Thursday voiced her support for abortion rights ahead of the release of her upcoming memoir, drawing a stark contrast with her husband, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, on this crucial election issue.

In a video posted to her X social media account, the former first lady defended women’s “individual freedoms” to do whatever they want with their bodies, a stance that is at odds with much of the Republican Party and with her own husband, who has struggled to find a consistent message on abortion while caught between his anti-abortion base and his pro-choice supporters.

“Individual liberty is a fundamental principle that I protect. There is certainly no room for compromise when it comes to this essential right that all women have from birth: individual liberty. What does ‘my body, my choice’ really mean?” she said.

The video appears to confirm excerpts from her eponymous memoir reported by The Guardian on Wednesday.

Melania Trump has rarely publicly expressed her political views and has been largely absent from the campaign trail.

But in her memoir, which is due to be released publicly on Tuesday, she argues that the decision to terminate a pregnancy should be left to a woman and her doctor, “free from any government intervention or pressure,” according to published excerpts.

“A woman’s fundamental right to individual liberty, to her own life, gives her the authority to terminate a pregnancy if she so desires,” Melania wrote, according to The Guardian.

These views contrast sharply with the Republican Party’s anti-abortion platform and with Donald Trump, who has repeatedly claimed responsibility for appointing the three Supreme Court justices who helped overturn Roe v. Wade and has boasted of returning abortion to the states.

Democrats blame the former president for the severe deterioration of reproductive rights, as abortion bans were implemented in large swathes of the country following the overturn of the landmark case granting a constitutional right to abortion.

The national advocacy group SBA Pro-Life America criticized the former first lady’s views on abortion, including her stance on late-term abortion, but stressed that her “priority is to defeat [Democratic candidate] Kamala Harris.”

Donald Trump vowed Tuesday to veto the federal abortion ban, the first time he has explicitly said so, after previously refusing to answer questions on the issue.

However, abortion rights advocates are skeptical, warning that Trump cannot be trusted not to restrict reproductive rights.
